WinLog Documentation
I
About WinLog-WinLog was written for the busy computer user
providing reminders in chronological order in both date and
time. Automatic updating results in a very efficient
scheduling system. Reminders are listed on the screen
starting with the current date minus three days. Twelve
reminders are displayed and the rest may be viewed using
Up/Down buttons. Six types of reminders are maintained by
the program as follows:
One Time Reminders-The one time reminder is deleted when the
reminder date has passed.
Annual Reminders-The annual reminder is automatically updated
to the same calendar date in the following year after the re-
minder date has passed. This type of a reminder is
especially useful for birthdays, anniversaries and other
events which occur on the same date each year.
Monthly Reminders-This type of a reminder is automatically
updated to the same day of the week in the following
month.(ie If the original date is for the second Monday in
January, it will be updated to the second Monday of
February.)
Last ??? of Month-If you wish to select the last Friday of
the month, or, any other day of the week, this is the
reminder type you would select WinLog will automatically
calculate the date for the current month and for each month
thereafter.
Biweekly Reminders-These reminders are updated to the same
day on alternate weeks.
Weekly Reminders-These reminders are updated to the same day
in the next week. This is most often useful for weekly
meetings, golf dates, weekly luncheons and the like.
If a reminder is completed or is to be skipped this time it
may be temporarily deleted. It will be listed again when its
current date has passed. Reminders may also be permanently
deleted when no longer useful.
Each reminder has one comment line which will be displayed on
the screen when the program is running; Associated with each
reminder are two additional lines which may be called with a
display routine. These are useful for adding comments and or
data such as addresses or phone numbers or comments which
should not casually appear on the screen for passers by to
see!
Unless a reminder has been temporarily deleted it will
continue to be listed for 3 additional days even though the
reminder date has passed and the reminder has been updated.
Both the original listing and the updated listing will
continue to be displayed for those three days assuming that
if it was not temporarily deleted it may not have been done
and you may want to be reminded of it.
The computer will sound an alarm of one second beeps for one
minute if you specify an Alarm Offset when the reminder is
entered. This offset is in minutes before the reminder time.
It will be turned off if the reminder is temporarily deleted.
Program operation is user friendly and for the most part it
is not necessary to use this documentation. It will however
provide detailed information for using some of the functions.
Hardware requirements are minimal but the Computer `Date'
function must be operational for the program to function
properly!
II
Installation-WinLog is installed like most Windows programs.
Mount the distribution disk on your floppy drive, open the
file menu in the Program Manager, select RUN and type
A:\SETUP. (This assumes that your floppy drive is the `A'
drive.) The program will create a subdirectory called WinLog
and will be installed in your Startup group.
WinLog requires a file called VBRUN300.DLL. If this file is
not available on your system you will get an error message.
In that case, exit Windows, mount your distribution disk on
your A: drive and run XFRVBRUN.EXE. The required file will
be copied to your Windows\System directory where it is
normally resident for this and other programs.
III
The Data Screen-The data screen displays twelve reminders in
date and time order starting with reminders having the
current date minus three days. Those reminders having the
current date will be emphasized by color highlighting. You
may choose any reminder for further display or processing as
discussed later in this documentation by simply clicking on
that reminder with the mouse.
Reminders beyond the twelfth may be examined by using the
<Page Down>/<Page Up> buttons. Along with the date and time,
a note is displayed which indicates the purpose of the
reminder. If there is additional data on the two hidden
lines, an asterisk will appear at the end of the displayed
note. The remaining lines may be displayed using the
Display/Edit routine discussed below.
IV
Add a Reminder-Clicking on this button guides you through the
data entry procedure necessary to establish a new reminder.
Only three items are absolutely necessary; One, the reminder
type; Two, the date; Three the prompt note. The time is
optional as are the two additional explanatory notes and the
Alarm Offset.
The entered date is checked to make sure it is valid. Any
irregularities result in a date error message with an
automatic return to the date input section.
The entered time is checked to make sure you include an `A'
for morning and a `P' for afternoon (AM is assumed for times
under 12:00). The AM/PM question is be mute if time is
entered in the 24:00 system. The midnight hour is not
recommended as a valid time because of the date ambiguity!
Once these three options have been selected, you may
terminate the reminder input by selecting the <Accept>
button.. The new reminder will be immediately sequenced and
will be presented on the screen when the data is next
displayed.
Reminder Modification-Reminders may be erased, temporarily
deleted or edited by selecting the reminder in one of two
ways. The reminder may be selected with the mouse while
displayed on the screen. Reminders which have be temporarily
deleted will not be displayed. In order to select such a
reminder, click on the Select Reminder button and all the
reminders will be listed in chronological order. Select the
reminder of interest by clicking on its listing. When a
reminder has been selected, a menu will be displayed which
allows a choice of temporary deletion, erasing and reminder
editing.
Temporary Delete-This option allows deletion of a reminder
which has already been done or one which will be skipped in
this period. When temporarily deleted, a reminder will not
be displayed until the reminder date has passed. At that
time, the date will updated and the reminder will again
become active.
Erase a Reminder-This function permanently erases a reminder
and frees the memory it required while it was functional.
Once erased, the data
